From New York Times Bestselling Author Dorien Kelly
When Irish artist Vi Kilbride travels from her village of Ballymuir to prepare her beloved late grandmother's cottage in Duncarraig for sale, more than memories of the summers she'd spent growing up there await her. Long-ago love Liam Rafferty is back in town. Vi, who has kept her heart to herself since having it broken by Liam, finds herself drawn to him all over again. Time has spun back to that passionate summer when they'd first loved for Liam, too. But Vi and Liam are soon at odds. Liam has begun a search for Rafferty's Gold, a legendary treasure allegedly hidden by one of Vi's ancestors after her heart had been broken by a faithless Rafferty. Liam, with his high-tech search equipment, might think the ancient gold is his to do with as he pleases. But Vi, with only her often stubborn second sight and her grandmother's journals to guide her, knows the gold belongs in a museum. Will these two passionate treasure-seekers find a legendary love to go with the gold, or is their past too strong to conquer?

In the final book of the Ballymuir Trilogy, Dorien Kelly brings us full circle in the cycle of life. We see a side to Vi that was hinted at but not fully brought to light in the other two books. She's always been a fun-loving, free-spirited person but melancholy at times. She's a nurturer, a peace-keeper, she's fiercely protective of those she loves and a kind and loving friend. We find out what she is hiding and we watch her transform herself with the help of her family and the love of a good man.Vi has lost the "sight". It just went away and she feels like she's lost her best friend. Finances are making her clean and sell her nam's home. Of course, her mam refuses to help the twins so it is falling to her, again. What she discovers during this time has left her feeling lost, confused, angry and bereft. Then there is Liam. The lost love of her youth. The only man she ever gave her heart to only to have it broken. She won't deny the attraction and she cannot deny her body of what it craves. She'll keep her heart out of it and enjoy the time that she has with him. Well, until he decides that "Rafferty's Gold" is buried on her land and he is going to find it and claim it for his own, no matter the consequences.
Liam has returned to Ireland with his daughter, Meghan. He has no intentions of staying. A six month visit while his ex-wife is working in a dangerous location. He has no idea how to be a father or how to tame his daughter. Hopefully, with the help of family, he'll work through this time with Meghan, find "Rafferty's Gold" and head back to Boston to rebuild the company that was swindled out from under him. Then there is Vi. He was surprised to hear she was back in Duncarraig and had to make sure the rumors were true - he needed to see her. She was the only woman he gave his heart to and only married Beth when she became pregnant. He was an absentee husband and parent. But, Vi - the woman he dreamed about, thought about and wished he could have every day of his life - he'd do anything for her, to get her back into his life, to have her love again. Well, almost anything ... no, he will not give up his search for the gold. The legend says that it will be returned to a Rafferty when the need is greatest. He had need for it and will fight Vi to the end to make her see that it belongs to him and not her or some fancy museum.
As we learn of Vi's past and the guilt that she has lived with, our hearts break. Liam has no idea of what happened or what he left behind when he went to America. No one, except mam, knows of her secret. But she knows that in order to love fully and with her whole heart, she has to tell Liam the truth and pray that he understands. She knows that nam is guiding her as her "sight" slowly comes back to her. She knows that nam is trying to tell her something very important but it is being blocked. After a careful and thorough look inside herself, everything becomes clear. It's time to forgive everyone, including herself.
"The Brightest Flame in Ballymuir" was a wild and fun ride with more tales and legends of the Emerald Isle. We are introduced to the whole Rafferty Clan which brought some much needed humor to the pages as the details of Vi's past are being revealed. The Kilbrides finally come together as a unit with her mam taking a good look at herself, as well, and starts to forgive those who she thinks did her wrong. Michael and Kylie have a beautiful baby girl. Pat and Danny are living in Ballymuir and working for Michael. Muir House is thriving under Jenna and Dev's love and devotion. The spirits are returning to Vi and now it's time for her to make a life with Liam. But, what of the gold?
I really do leave Ballymuir with a heavy heart. There is so much potential for other books and I would so love to keep hearing the stories of times past. Again, Ms. Kelly brought Ireland to life with her writing. You could hear the lilt of their voices, see the smiles in their eyes and hear the songs that are sung. I wish I knew more about Irish Folklore to know if the tales told in these books were true or a figment of Dorien Kelly's imagination. They were told with such passion that you could not help to hope and believe that they were true.
So, on behalf of the whole Guilty Pleasures Crew, I would like to leave you with an old Irish Blessing and wish you all a very Happy Saint Patrick's Day!
May love and laughter light your days,

May good and faithful friends be yours,

The Brightest Flame in Ballymuir Ballymuir Series Book 3 eBook Dorien Kelly Reviews
this story was great, the people great to met and fine to read about. I liked it so much I ordered the next two in the series. May not read number 3 as number too was too descriptive for me to enjoy reading sex , sex activities and sex again and again. To each his or her own. Wonder how soon they will all end up with some disease? No wonder today so many contacted illness best not described here.
I loved the other two books in this series but this one with Vi was the best one of all. The story of Vi and Liam Rafferty seemed to take forever to finally get told but it was certainly worth reading. You would never think that Vi could recover from his leaving her and then marrying someone else, but it makes for some great storytelling to find out how that's achieved. The Rafferty family were a joy to discover and I'm sure their story would be very interesting, too. Vi's mother and Da are really fleshed out in this story and a lot of the mother's behavior is semi explained. I wasn't familiar with Dorien Kelly before finding these Ballymuir books but I'll sure be on the lookout for other books by this author.
On Jan. 12, 2013, I tweeted Dorien Kelley and told her I'd read the two preceding books in this series, loved them and was just starting on this one. I tweeted her to let her know how much I love this series, and she advised she has another "Ballymuir" series book coming out in February (so, at this writing, it may already be out). This is one of a very few "series" books I've read. I guess I figured they were like movie sequels, but that's not true in this case. In fact, I loved the second Ballymuir book, "The Boldest Man In Ballymuir," more than the first...and the first one was a great story. Very well written with details of Ireland, so I wondered if Dorien had been to Ireland. That's why I tweeted her. She advised she's been there three times, the first trip lasting one month. She drinks Ireland in and then pours it out into her books. If you love Ireland and a well-written love story, try this series.
I so enjoyed the first book, the second was charming. I guess it was predictable that the third, which features the most interesting and colorful character of all, was a bit of a bore. Couple separated 15 years ago are reunited and fall almost instantly into bed...despite a hurtful parting that is mentioned over and over until we finally find out a bit more about it but not exactly enough. The hero is really not very likeable and is somewhat dense and self-involved. So all they have is sexual attraction but somehow no, it's more than that. The backstories and tension making issues here are a bit more developed than in the first two books, but somehow this one annoyed me, didn't take my breath away like the first. The character interaction has its touching moments, however. Towards the end something happens with the hero's child which is really nasty and is left dangling, like they just forget about the child. I wanted a different ending for that as well.
I am a retired school teacher therefore I have ample time to enjoy my hobby of reading. I also read the reviews of a book before I purchase one. Sometimes I am frustrated by the reviews because once I start reading the book I realize the reviewer is much younger and maybe we are not in the same stage of reading. That being said, I really enjoyed this book. I liked it enough to buy the other books in the series. I am more than likely too easy to please but I read for enjoyment only. A few mistakes by the author does not bother me. I am in awe of people who can write stories I enjoy. A four star is a great read and five star is reserved for an outstanding read. I have purchased over 1000 books from in the last five years.
